As I recall from years ago, team coaches taught regular curriculum as well. A history teacher might coach football after hours and on weekends. A math teacher might coach the school's baseball squad or cheer-leadingbsquad. But the school's core curriculum took precedence over the "extra-curricular." Or have I got it all bass-ackwards?
One wonders how many $7.5 mil Math or English teachers there are?
"Hayes was a noted historian with a passion for military history. He held the rank of associate professor at Ohio State and took great pride in being able to teach during the offseason. He was as proud of his players' high graduation rate as he was of their success on the football field."
#1 Ohio State vs #2 Indiana in national ranking & in conference, play for most of the "marbles" tonight! Will the loser be invited to playoffs? Teams to be released Sunday 12/7/25
Packers survive second half comeback by Bears . Onward to Denver & Rocky Mountain High! Altitude may play a part in who wins? How about Buffalo & the snowball game?
I was shocked to read they were paying the guy $5.5 Mil a year to coach football! Is that what universities are about today? Any literature, math or history profs making anything near that amount?

Good interview with Bob Costas on Cuomo Friday. I'm hoping to dig it up and post it. I do not follow college sports. I was shocked to hear some college athletes are being paid millions of dollars a year for playing and that some may play for 3 or 4 different college teams before graduating - assuming they graduate at all. Good grief.
Must be a challenge in the classroom trying to motivate some dude to analyze Shakespeare or study the Periodic Table who is making $3 Mil a year for playing on the school's football team and planning on only hanging around for the season.
The issue with the U of M coach does not appear to be a direct consequence of the role of money in sports. He'd been messing around with a female subordinate for several years, all the while married. She broke off the affair and felt compelled to report it to the department officials. After he was fired he confronted her in her home and threatened to take his own life.
Nuts!
BINGO - Here's the Costas interview. Always liked Bob.
@hank =+1 Unfortunately the all mighty dollar is turning sports into a piss pot.
The "mighty dollar" turns all things into a piss pot.
Why for many years, certain things were restricted in amature sports. At one point advertising in the legal profession was restricted. And advertising in pharma is another example. .

Along another vein, that kind of money might go to your head whether coach or player. Must be a tough slog. Probably some serious "attitude problems".
