US congressmen ask judge to appoint official to force release of all Epstein files

edited January 8 in Off-Topic
Following are excerpts from a current report in The Guardian:

• Democrat Ro Khanna and Republican Thomas Massie seek to compel justice department to release full set of files.

• Filing reveals US justice department has released less than 1% of Epstein files.
Two US House of Representatives members have asked a federal judge to appoint a special master to compel the justice department to release all files related to Jeffrey Epstein, the disgraced financier and convicted sex offender. On Thursday, Democratic representative Ro Khanna of California and Republican representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky asked US district judge Paul Engelmayer to release the full Epstein files, as required by the Epstein Files Transparency Act.

Criticizing the justice department for not releasing the full set of files on last year’s 19 December deadline, Khanna and Massie in a letter said: “The conduct by the DOJ is not only a flagrant violation of the mandatory disclosure obligations under the Epstein Files Transparency Act, but as this Court has recognized in its previous rulings, the behavior by the DOJ has caused serious trauma to survivors.

“As the leads of the Epstein Files Transparency Act, we have urgent and grave concerns about DOJ’s failure to comply with the Act as well as the Department’s violations of this Court’s order,” the representatives said, adding: “Put simply, the DOJ cannot be trusted with making mandatory disclosures under the Act.” Pointing to a justice department court filing earlier this week stating that 12,285 documents have been released – marking less than 1% of all related files – and that 2 million more are under review, Khanna and Massie casted doubt on those figures.

“Because these figures are self-reported and internally inconsistent with prior representations, there is reasonable suspicion that the DOJ has overstated the scope of responsive materials, thereby portraying compliance as unmanageable and effectively delaying disclosure,” they said in the letter.

Khanna and Massie also pointed to the justice department’s failure to submit required reports within 15 days of the deadline to the House and Senate judiciary committees detailing redactions and other records withheld from release. “To date, no such report has been provided. Without it, there is no authoritative accounting of what records exist, what has been withheld, or why, making effective oversight and judicial review far more difficult,” they said.

As part of their request, Khanna and Massie asked Engelmayer to allow the independent monitor to be given authority to notify the court “about the true nature and extent of the document production and if improper redactions or other improper conduct is taking place”. “Absent an independent process, as outlined above, we do not believe the DOJ will produce the records that are required by the Act and what it has represented to this Court,” the representatives said.

Comment:   Reading between the lines it suggests that Congressmen Khanna and Massielack may lack faith in the honesty of the US Department of Justice.

"In a social media post in September, Musk wrote that Epstein 'tried to get me to go to his island
and I REFUSED.' But the documents released Friday suggested that Musk was at one point eager to visit.
'What day/night will be the wildest party on your island?' Musk emailed Epstein in November 2012."

"On a podcast last year, Howard Lutnick, the secretary of commerce, described being so revolted
by a mid-2000s visit to Epstein's Manhattan mansion that he decided to 'never be in a room
with that disgusting person ever again.' Lutnick's disgust appeared to prove temporary.
In 2012, he emailed with Epstein to arrange a visit with his wife and children to Epstein's private island
    just before Christmas."

"Kathy Ruemmler, a White House counsel under President Barack Obama who is now general counsel
of Goldman Sachs, has said she provided Epstein with professional services and legal advice.
But in newly released emails with Epstein and others, she discussed meeting up with him
    and what she described as 'the girls'; analyzed troubling dreams;
and arranged to accept the delivery of expensive gifts from him."

"A 2013 email exchange with British billionaire Richard Branson hinted that he, too,
had a familiar relationship with Epstein. 'It was really nice seeing you yesterday,' Branson wrote,
adding: 'Any time you're in the area would love to see you. As long as you bring your harem!'"

"New York real estate mogul Andrew Farkas, a powerful political donor with ties to
former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and President Donald Trump, co-owned a marina with Epstein
in St. Thomas for years. The two men traded crude emails about women in one 2010 exchange,
after Epstein's first arrest and conviction. Farkas told Epstein in a 2018 note that he loved him
and considered him one of his best friends before signing off, "xoxo."
    Farkas stayed on Epstein's island."

"Early last year, billionaire venture capitalist Peter Thiel wrote an essay for the Financial Times
arguing that Trump's reelection meant that closely guarded government secrets --
including about Epstein's death -- would finally come to light. In the months since,
the scrutiny around Epstein instead revealed that an investment firm co-founded by Thiel
accepted $40 million from Epstein and that Epstein and Thiel corresponded for at least five years
    before Epstein's death."

"In the early 2010s, he became acquainted with Steve Tisch, the co-owner of the New York Giants
football team, who Epstein in one 2013 exchange called a 'new but obviously shared interest friend.'
Tisch met a young woman through one of Epstein's assistants and then asked another woman
whether she was 'pro or civilian?' In another email that year, Epstein invited Tisch to his mansion
in the late evening. 'Can I expect 'trouble'?' Tisch wrote.
Epstein said he could invite an unnamed Russian woman to join them 'if you like.'"

Comments: Mr. Epstein cultivated relationships with many rich and powerful people.
It must be said that none of the people listed above—to my knowledge—have been charged
with committing any crimes connected to Mr. Epstein.
Many of them ostensibly deeply regretted associating with him.
  • But only because they are now being outed or at the very least mentioned in the files. Does anyone care to guess how much it will cost them to get the justice they want?

    Exactly!
