board migration: Saturday, 3/21 and Sunday, 3/22. Be ready!

Hi, guys.

First, a thousand thanks for your notes about the new board. Chip has read them all, responded directly to some folks and is trying to track down options to address other concerns (e.g., in the new software, unread threads are gray and read threads are black, which strikes folks as backward).

Second, Chip hopes to trigger the migration on Saturday, 3/21. The site will be offline during the migration; she estimates 2-3 hours, max. We will post a heads-up an hour or so in advance. Sunday would mostly be cleanup operations.

Third, you will need to log in again on the new board, so be sure you have your username (not your email) and passwords handy. Chip can reset passwords manually (she cannot see your current password but can overwrite it with a generic password like "newboard"), after which you can customize it again. Eventually the site will have a viable "I forgot my password" button, it exists now but seem to be really slow.

Fourth, this week's posts will have to be manually transferred, one by one. The automated migration works only if we're moving all 56,000+ posts at a time, which is time intense and touchy. We did the mass migration already, so Chip will be working to move just the last hundred or so individually. It's possible that we'll have to copy an entire discussion thread and then place it in a single post (as if the OP and 10 comments all were typed in the same box and the same time), but responses from there would work as usual.

Thanks for your time, support and patience. We'll share more as it becomes available.

  • Hi David- what a coincidence- you just addressed transport concerns that I mentioned in the other thread:
It looks like when the MFO-2 database was loaded, it faithfully transported all of the then-existing Discussions from MFO-1. However, (and this would seem to be expected) no new posts on MFO-1 are being shown on MFO-2. (MFO-2 cannot see what's currently being added to MFO-1.)

This suggests that when the final cut is made from MFO-1 to MFO-2 we either re-transport all of the MFO-1 Discussions to fully update MFO-2, or we just start using MFO-2 as-is, which will lose several recent days of MFO-1 posts.

If that's the way things are, I'd vote to re-transport the entire MFO-1 Discussions DB, and lose whatever has accumulated in MFO-2 up to this point. There's not much there except a number of testing efforts.
  • Question: Will those of us who have already been fooling around on MFO-2 have to log in again?
  • Hi, OJ. Chip doesn't think you'll need to log-in again. She'll review my post after the gym tonight and will spend time clearing up the confusion I endlessly sow.
  • Thanks David- from this end it seems as if you guys have the thing well under control. And there is a real advantage for all of Chip's work on this- unlike Vanilla, where she inherited a lot of Accipitor's modifications, she will be intimately familiar with the new software, and that will make any future troubleshooting a whole lot easier. We hope.
  • Whoa. i'm glad the ones who are doing all this work are so smart. Thank you a ton!
  • And, following popular demand, Chip has the "tag" function working. If she mentions @david_snowball in a post on the new board, an alert pops up on my screen. For what merriment it offers, David
  • Nice job.
    Thank you!
