Here's a statement of the obvious: The opinions expressed here are those of the participants, not those of the Mutual Fund Observer. We cannot vouch for the accuracy or appropriateness of any of it, though we do encourage civility and good humor.
Perhaps more useful might be "Studies of the Influence of Alien Presence on the Variations Seen in the Republican Party since the election of Donald Trump".
The takeover of certain Republican bodies by aliens might reveal the real reasons for the c…
Not a day goes by that 'm not thankful that I'm as old as I am and won't have to deal with the wonderful new world that's being created. My 2009 Toyota pickup will just have to make it to the end. $42,000 repair- how long does anyone think that insu…
Yes, very sad. In 1970 I happened to be introduced to Fritz Maytag- a very nice fellow. I figured Anchor was a goner when bought by Sapporo. Sure not much left of the SF that I grew up in.
"Chances are excellent I don't know what I'm talking about."
@sfnative- I really can't agree with that. The chances are excellent that you are absolutely right.
"I read every columnist mentioned here when I was a kid. I'm not sure why they appeal…
Absolutely. If I remember correctly it was Delaplane who referred to blood-pressure machines as "the Judas cuff". I've been fighting high BP for quite a while now, and think of that every time I take a reading. My doctor is only mildly amused.
@WABAC- Yes, we used to eat there fairly often. It's long gone, but there are still a couple of good "Original" Joe's in SF.
If you enjoyed Arthur Hoppe's old column in the Chomical you should also enjoy an occasional "column" from his son, Nick Ho…
@Anna- thanks for that reminder. Even as a teenager I loved Asimov.
By the way, Nanette Asimov, niece of Isaac Asimov, writes occasionally for the SF Chronicle. Her articles remind me of "the old days", when the Chronicle was a real newspaper, rath…
@catch22- I finally had the time and opportunity to watch this. Excellent, just excellent. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that this field will lead to some amazing advances in many sciences.
There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that thi…
@MikeM- Hi there Mike- For a U.S. bank the main difference would be FDIC coverage for a CD vs the lack of coverage for a bond. I'm uncertain as to insurance for Canadian bank deposits, but it would likely be the same for a Canadian bank bond.

"I was struck by the forever-anxiety- look on his face and the depressing message he unfailingly delivered. Friday night after Friday night after Friday night."
@Crash- Thanks for that memory.
This entire unfortunate situation makes me wonder- with the world's largest military budget, we didn't have a decent reserve of regular ammunition or the ability to quickly ramp up production? What if we had needed it for a war of our own, rather th…
@dtconroe- Hey, thanks much for your follow-up. I'll be watching closely to see if the Fed does in fact raise rates again soon... if they do, that might up the rates a bit.

@Mark- Thanks much for those two links. To my surprise, the Chamber of Commerce link seems accurate and non-judgemental, citing good reasons such as lack of available child care for a significant amount of the non-employment.
As usual, Baseball_Fan…
Oh yes- this used to be on our local NPR station, and it was excellent. My hearing degradation prevents listening, but I just subscribed to their newsletter.
Thanks much, David.

Absolutely. Lots of stuff to choose from- whatever works best for you. At 84, with wife not into financial stuff, I'm keeping it simple. Just trying to maintain a little income to offset inflation (at least partially). About half in CDs/Treasuries, …
My wife mentioned to me earlier this morning that she was surprised that no one was killed at the annual Gay Pride parade a couple of weeks ago. This is what we have been brought to by the crazies, abetted by the gun lobbies.
From The Guardian:
Fourth of July overshadowed by 16 mass shootings across US-
Fifteen people killed and 94 injured across 13 states as well as Washington DC
And as a nation we should be proud of this ???
WABAC: "Looking forward to getting money out of short-term CD's. I tried it. Didn't like it. Will stick to money markets and floating rate T-Bills."
Stillers: "Um, yeah, that's the "given."
• Um, yeah, what's "the given?"
Stillers: Only invest …
