  • Emerging Market Funds - Looking for an Oxymoron
I'm looking for a good emerging market fund that would be considered on the "conservative" end of the EM equity spectrum...any unique funds out there that have a lower volatility tilt?
I vote for SFGIX, too. The other share-class is SIGIX.
I checked-out my own holding, PRIDX, after reading your question. But it holds only 19.46% in EM. And it's a fund devoted to only small-caps, but worldwide. I like the fund.
  • Emerging Market Funds - Looking for an Oxymoron
In last month's Elevator Talk, Paul allows that he'll pursue for SFVLX some investments that are riskier than what would be appropriate in SFGIX.
If you want to limit downside, consider a fund that hedges its equity exposure. There are three possible hedges: a hybrid fund that holds bonds (often flagged "Total" or "Multi-asset"), a fund that's willing to hold a lot of cash, or a fund with a formal hedging policy. I screened for open, retail funds with the lowest downside deviation over the past five years. Here are 14 of the 15 "best" (the other was an institutional fund). Ten of the 14 have peer-beating returns over that period. Remember: these aren't recommendations, these are just a set of funds that meets one of your criteria that you might want to learn a bit more about.

  • Matthews Funds - Why Invest in Asia? - Robert Horrock commentary
Asia may be the future, just not likely in my life time.
My EM fund is SFGIX which tends to over weight Asia. Also bought into MAINX last month in hopes it does better than domestic bonds during increasing interest rates.
  • Don't Fear The Rate Hike, Bond Investors
Altogether, my portf. holds 37% bonds right now, of all sorts. No worry here, long term. I just X-Rayed my stuff. In the aggregate, my funds are holding 6% cash. Bonds: 22% short-term, 28% moderate-term, Long-term: 36%. A bit of a surprise re: long-term. "Not classified:" 15%. Some of these bonds are in my 2 balanced funds. PRWCX and MAPOX. The other funds are PREMX and PRSNX and SFGIX. None of these were mistakes. :)
  • What are you ... Buying ... Selling ... or Pondering? (March 2017)
Sold COP on THE worst day to do so. Putting the funds into PNM. It should actually MAKE me some money, over there. My only other non-tax-sheltered investment is SFGIX.
  • Rondure Global Advisors: Funds Soon to Be Available?
Re-reading the last commentary on Laura Geritz and her new venture, the description for her fund suggests it would be a bit higher in market cap than Grandeur Peak...according to GP president Eric Huefner. But when I look at the the fund she managed at Wasatch, WAIOX, the market cap is actually lower than GPGOX...though with an attractive go-anywhere international style.
    My current similar holdings:
    In taxable:
    -MAPTX
    -GPMCX
    Tax deferred:
    -SFGIX
    -GPGOX
    -FMIJX
I'm pretty happy with these....not sure if there's a place for anything new unless something compelling surfaces.

  • PRMSX TRP EM stocks
@Crash: Samsung will have little if any impact on SFGIX, and long-term none. Never allow any single holding in a fund to influence your decision on owning it.
    Regards,
    Ted
  • PRMSX TRP EM stocks
Samsung has legal problems, lately. But in SFGIX, it's PREFERRED shares. Dunno if that makes any difference. Second-largest holding, though.
  • The Callan Periodic Table of Investment Returns: (1997–2016)
@Old_Skeet I have 10% devoted to EM through sfgix and Mathews Asia Growth and Income. I have 10% devoted to SC/Midcap mostly through TSP S fund. Not going to make big changes. I just might start adding more to scv and em outside of work accounts (ira/roth ira). DCA into IRAs so no big moves in a richly valued market. Thanks.

SFGIX was. ARIVX was the Eric Cinnamond small value fund Aston/River Independent Value fund now liquidated.
  • Best and Worst Funds Discovered Here At MFO
So many mutual fund ideas have past through this web-site and it's predecessor FundAlarm since I started visiting 11+ years ago. Some ended up being stinkers, but others have ended up being staples in my portfolio. With that, I was wondering what fund ideas were found here by others here at MFO/FundAlarm that were either bad buys or those that were great. These come quickly to mind for me:
The 3 best for me have been: (in no particular order):
PRWCX, SFGIX, and PONDX (DSENX is quickly finding it's way up the list, just haven't owned it as long).
    3 stinkers I wish I didn't gamble on:
    USAGX, ARIVX, WASYX
  • PRMSX TRP EM stocks
Haven't looked in a while, but I see SFGIX is now 15% in Latin America also. I'd like to say I wish Mr. Foster would lighten up on Asia, but what the heck do I know. I wouldn't trade this EM fund for any other.
  • PRMSX TRP EM stocks
Just noticed. ON FIRE. +10.92, YTD, 2/23/2017. PRMSX. Don't own it. I do own SFGIX, and it lags PRMSX these days. But look back 5 years: SFGIX wins, hands-down. SFGIX is closed, anyhow. If you're not already in, I'd say PRMSX deserves a look. Eh?
  • Best/worst performing fund YTD in your portfolio
Top performer ytd: SFGIX +7.73. Number two: PRIDX +6.96. Worst: TRREX: +0.32. Bonds, of course, are a horse of a different color: PREMX +2.95% and PRSNX +1.28.
  • Best/worst performing fund YTD in your portfolio
    Top 3: PRHSX 10%, ARTYX 9%, SFGIX 8%
    Bottom 3: HSFNX -1.50%, TREMX 3%, VISVX 3.5%
All rounded to nearest .5%. All look like risky EM and sector bets, but they are all a small portal of my portfolio. YTD -> 5%
