The older I get, the more I see instance after instance after instance, that hyperbole is not being taught as a literary tool, in school. Either it's not being taught, or most stoodents (sic) weren't paying attention. Alternatively, it might very well be that English is not the first language of more and more people living in our midst. That could be the case, too. A sense of humor, I have learned, is the last aspect of a new language that is typically mastered.

One prominent poster called Trump "by far the most evil" leader of all time. "Yeah, most evil. Shit, he makes Hitler look like Jimmy Carter[.]" And not one sincere word pushing back on that view, no "fact checks" on the atrocities of the past, no nothing except to pile on more Trump hate. Yet zero hedge can't even be mentioned. Either people are entitled to express their views no matter how disagreeable (or simply wrong), or they are not. I liked OS' posts and hope he reconsiders.

Such an opinion is subjective. It cannot be argued against or supported. So there's nothing to push back against. When Trump says, for instance, that the attendance at his inauguration was the largest in history, this is something to be argued with because it is provably false. Some of "Old_Cecil's " political posts likewise contained subjective opinions. Who argued with those? They can't be proven wrong or right. Most of his political posts contained provable falsehoods so well-informed people with a moral sense and a sense of patriotic duty responded.
And nobody said Zero Hedge can't be mentioned. It was said that it can't be trusted. It was said that it is a foreign agency with malignant intentions towards our country.
If (as you claim) you can't "argue against" Trump NOT being "by far the most evil leader of all time" then you should not be arguing at all. The poster directly said Trump was worse than Hitler. Care to defend that "opinion"? Hitler murdered some 12 million people. Mao is credited with north of 40 million deaths. Yet, the shocking thing is this opinion about Trump is not just that of an isolated ignorant fool, plenty of people share it mainly because they are holocaust deniers and/or know little of less famous genocides throughout human history. But my point was not the truth or falsity of the opinion, it was the fact that it was a pretty outlandish opinion by any measure yet no one weighed in because they hate trump. When others like me and OS and a few others try and make any point even remotely supportive of Trump and/or critical of the dems it routinely invites a 10 car pile up. I would have preferred OS to just skip the political posts, but he chose another path that I hope he reconsiders.

The comment "Trump is worse than Hitler" is so hyperbolic it's hard to believe people take it seriously. By contrast an article from a Russian propaganda site like ZeroHedge can look all too real and has fooled people. Old_Skeet would routinely say those articles were from legitimate sources and claimed that he believed them, even though there have now been multiple accounts that the site is a Russian trojan horse. Such propaganda because it seems like it might be true is far more dangerous than one poster's hyperbole.

are you vacillating about who you will vote for?

    not remotely :)

I just meant that I read an awful lot of policy longform journalism that I wind up thinking at length (not always productively, mind you) about it and form my take and then go read some more

OT, as for anonymity, who besides Braham and me (and that nice advisor-type guy from Columbus [?], now departed) uses their full name and has their identity be known / findable? (Same on Twitter, not at all on Facebook.)
  • The comment "Trump is worse than Hitler" is so hyperbolic it's hard to believe people take it seriously.

That doesn't work for me. It reminds me too much of "It was a joke." or "I was only kidding." or "Where's your sense of humor?" or "You're just virtue signalling." or "You're just being politically correct." or "If you took my comments the wrong way, I apologize."

I must be too old to take Hitler less than seriously.

Latch onto one, single, hyperbolic statement. That should prove your point (I assume?) that the Orange Unit is the best thing to happen to the human race since Jesus Christ or sliced bread. As a human being, he is a disaster. As a businessman? How do you drive even a casino into the ground? As a President? He puts his vapid soul and complete lack of ethics on display, EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. ...Or should we approve of and vote FOR this kind of behavior and total lack of leadership? In fact, he has acted in ways that are detrimental to the country. Regardless of Party, the tRumpster is just plain Evil on display. Maybe some of his supporters might share with us just why they are just ok with who he is and what he does....... If it's to defeat Democrats because they carry the name of Democrat, let me offer that it would be just plain silly to do THAT. And I'm not carrying water for the Democrats. https://howiehawkins.us/ .....But consider Charlie Baker in Massachusetts. Republican in a very Blue State. And he is respected. Because he leads. Because he THINKS. Because he actually KNOWS something. Because he is a GENUINE human being. He even casts a shadow, unlike the un-dead Trump.

Well now you've gone and done it. You wanted to compare Trump with Hitler, that was fine They didn't personally get their hands dirty. It's not as though you see Trump wandering 5th Avenue these days. I'll have you know that my family line came from Transylvania (true), and we don't look kindly on such slights. Compared with my ancestors, Trump is a rank amateur.

I'm done here. You'll never again see the darkness of my shadow over this site. Oh, wait ...
  • By way of context, I reached out to Skeet earlier this week and expressed two administrative opinions. (1) Diverse opinions, including those supportive of Mr. Trump, his policies and his re-election campaign, are welcome in the O.T. board. (2) Zero Hedge is not. I have, I wrote,

a profound concern about your reliance on the ZeroHedge site as the source of so much of your off-topic content. I'm less concerned about the fact that ZH is inflammatory, misleading and divisive and rather more concerned that it is intentionally inflammatory, misleading and divisive. There is a credible case to be made that the site is part of a foreign government's program to create the dissent for the purpose of weakening our country. Those concerns led Twitter, Facebook, Wikipedia and Google all to ban (or "de-monetize," in Google's case) the site.

There are a raft of good, conservative news sites - from Fox News, the WSJ, and National Review to CheckYourFact.com, a service of the Daily Caller - that are, I believe, trying to pursue the common good as it's informed by their own political framework.
I encouraged him to consider grounding his support in more reliable sources. That said, I understand, respect and regret his decision to move on.

We are going to test it. I will start posting opinions from Fox News and Rush Limbaugh.

  • Lordy, there ARE tapes!!! (and they're released)

Kayleigh McEnany on TV just now: “The president never downplayed the virus.”

Donald Trump on tape with Bob Woodward: “I wanted to always play it down. I still like playing it down because I don't want to cause a panic."
    ...

Kayleigh McEnany: "You're referring to something allegedly said to Bob Woodward."

    Geoff Bennett: "It's on tape."

... time to make the popcorn, the rage-tweeting and spin is going to be epic this week.

I have doubts that Trump is anti-Semitic given that his favorite advisor and son in law is an orthodox jew. Similarly, surprisingly (maybe, to some) with all of the "stuff" out there about what a bombastic schmuck Trump (supposedly) is there is little (no?) credible factual evidence that he is a racist (or anti-Semite). Also pretty amusing that Michael Cohen (also a jew) had no problem with his boss while he was on the payroll.

And lest I forget...if Trump had said what we KNOW that "safe" "moderate" Joe Biden said about Blacks (not black if you don't vote for me) and Indians ("You cannot go to a 7-Eleven or a Dunkin' Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent. I'm not joking") he would have been strung up by his feet. Just sayin'............
  • Howdy folks,

I stated my opinion that Trump is one of the most incompetent leaders of a major power of all time. A friendly amendment was offered up to say at least since the monarchies. Works for me.

Now my opinion that Trump is worse than Hitler stands. Now please realize that we’re talking Hitler in 1935 to Trump 2020. Now envision 10 more years of Trump in office. Tell me his body count won't exceed that of Hitlers. Fine. It won't be the Jews. It will be the blacks and Latinos and other peoples of color. Ten more years of Trump and they will all be back on the plantation.

And yeah, this is my opinion. If you don't agree, fine.

I have no idea what you are going on. When you accuse someone of being an anti-Semite or racist that's a very serious charge. If you are going to make that charge you had better bring the evidence. If you have the evidence lay it out. I'm always surprised by how suspicion and innuendo becomes fact the more it is repeated.

OK, Barbara Res -- held big position in Trump's construction enterprise when few woman held such posts, and now complains he was somehow anti-woman while also saying Trump treated her like the men. He was tough on everyone and said some stupid shit along the way. Sounds like Trump, but no support for him being a racist or anti-Semite.

Mary Trump -- estranged relative who spoke about the "Trump family" using the "N word" and making anti-Semitic remarks decades ago. I think that's probably true of many such families in that era, and I would suspect the kids of such families didn't object at the time and maybe even "joined in" occasionally. I'd hate to think that kids who grew up in that type of environment were forever branded as racists or anti-Semites. And, this all assumes Mary's version of events is true despite strong denials.

Michael Cohen -- Give me an F'n break!

et al. -- You need to be more specific.
