It's ok to proceed in this particular case.
  • Similar routine using Firefox.
  • One feature on MFO-1 that I don't think is on MFO-2 is the ability to get the attention of another poster by using the @otherposter like we do here.

    Old_Joe,

I @'ed you on MFO-2 a few hours ago and just did it again.
Let us know if it worked.
  • edited March 17
Yes, I did get a PM notification. But on MFO-1 I can get a notice (not a PM) either when someone adds a new post to a thread that I initiated, or wants to get my attention in a thread post by using the @Old_Joe symbol.
  • OK folks, I'm wrapping up this end for tonight. More fun on the morrow.

Thanks very much to all who help keep MFO going. I'm thinking that it's about time for me to make a donation to the cause... haven't done that in a while.
  • edited March 17
Yes, this is the MFO-1 result whenever someone invokes @Old_Joe within a post.
It's interesting that this action produces different results over on MFO-2.
  • I think that MFO at MyBB is functional.

    Now some 2nd order suggestions.

    1. Icon colors for threads. Red or blue colors for threads that don't have new posts visually draw more attention than gray threads with new posts. To me, this seems flipped. IMO, threads with new posts should have colors such as blue or green. Threads without new posts can just be grayed.

    2. Seems that a plugin is required for tagging users,
    https://community.mybb.com/mods.php?action=view&pid=885

Review the plugin library for other feature enhancements.
    MyBB Plug-in library https://community.mybb.com/mods.php?action=browse&category=plugins

    3. There are stars for members that probably also have default designations. That designation is customizable now. This may be reviewed.
  • More:

    4. To hide Off-Topic from "View New Posts" and "View Today's Post" indexes, you may have to make it semi-private or with restricted-access. It may also disappear from the Forum index and may be accessible only by a link to it that can be posted or bookmarked.

There are two existing categories which are no longer used.
If they are not needed, perhaps they could be deleted to decrease the size of the database?

    Category: The OT Bullpen
Description: This category contains less frequently commented off-topic discussions.
Latest thread/post was dated October 2022.

    Category: The Bullpen
Description: This category contains less frequently commented fund discussions.
Latest thread/post was dated October 2022 except for one post added to "M* on IOFIX" Announcement
    during July 2024.

Kudos to @WABAC for mentioning "The Bullpen" in another thread.
  • Still trying to get the feel of MFO-2.

It looks like when the MFO-2 database was loaded, it faithfully transported all of the then-existing Discussions from MFO-1. However, (and this would seem to be expected) no new posts on MFO-1 are being shown on MFO-2. (MFO-2 cannot see what's currently being added to MFO-1.)

This suggests that when the final cut is made from MFO-1 to MFO-2 we either re-transport all of the MFO-1 Discussions to fully update MFO-2, or we just start using MFO-2 as-is, which will lose several recent days of MFO-1 posts.

If that's the way things are, I'd vote to re-transport the entire MFO-1 Discussions DB, and lose whatever has accumulated in MFO-2 up to this point. There's not much there except a number of testing efforts.
  • Setting of 10 posts per page seems low. There may be a parameter that may be set to 30 or 40.

    @yogibearbull,

User CP > Edit Options > Thread View Options
My "Posts Per Page" setting was: Use Default

Options available: Show x posts per page
    x = 5 or 10 or 15 or 20 or 25 or 30 or 40 or 50

I selected 30 posts per page.
  • @Observant1- Thanks very much for that info.
  • I'm asking/hoping whether the 5 place ticker lettering with still 'blue highlight' and clickable for other features, as well as hovering to display the name of the fund. Three and four digit etf's had the function at one time, but I think a change in software several years ago killed that feature. This feature saved a lot of time in knowing what fund/etf someone was posting about.
Some here may not have been aware of the above.
  • @Observant1, thanks.

    From "Edit Options", I changed both: Threads /page = 30 (default 20), Posts/page = 30 (default 10).

Interesting that these are user-defined options. At some sites, these are administrators' options.

Also, I notices that posters show at the bottom of their posts (i) online/offline status (that can be hidden). (ii) PM icon. But PM icon is missing for my posts even though the Option "Receive private messages from other users" is checked (default). I have a link to my website too (an interesting feature), but the PM icon is missing whether I have the website link or not. What am I missing?
  • edited March 18
    @yogibearbull,

The PM button is not visible when a user views their own posts.
It is included in your posts—I just checked.

BTW, a user can change their alert settings after navigating to: User CP > Alert Settings.
    Several examples are below.
Receive alert for Private Message (PM)?
Receive alert when somebody replies to your thread?
Receive alert when quoted in a post?
  • @Observer1, thanks again. It makes sense - I cannot PM myself. I am OK with most defaults and want to change only those that seem problematic to me.
  • I wonder what "receive alert for reputation" means or does?
  • @Old_Joe: I think that means an attack is imminent, but you get fair warning.

As you said on the trial board thread, there’s a lot to learn on MFO.2. I fear my old brain will balk at having to deal with change.

There is an option to add Attachments when posting a reply.
The description states: "Your allocated attachment usage quota is Unlimited."

If this hasn't been done already, you may want to configure global file size limits or per user usage quotas
to prevent disk space utilization issues.

Update: I successfully added several attachments < 2 MB and deleted them afterward.
I then attempted to add several attachments > 3 MB.
These attempts failed: "You can upload a maximum of 2.1 MB at once."
Therefore a global file size limit already exists.
Implementing per user usage quotas might still be considered.
  • @BenWP- In my case the "receive alert for reputation" could only mean that it may be about to improve since it can't get any lower, but that really seems unlikely at this stage.

There doesn't seem to be an option for users to delete their own posts.
This might be a beneficial feature to add.

For example, I posted a test reply in a thread that I should not have used for testing purposes.
    https://cherylsnowball.com/discuss/showthread.php?tid=57764

Since I couldn't delete the post, I edited the post and replaced the content with the word "Deleted."
Deleting the entire post would have been a cleaner solution.

A nice-to-have "Day 2" feature would be OEF ticker resolution like we have on the current site.
I don't know if the MyBB platform provides this functionality.

Edit/Add: @catch22 also mentioned this feature in a prior post.
  • If memory does not betray, that feature was designed and added to the vanilla platform by our long gone and truly missed friend Accipiter.

YES! I'd love to see this feature reactivated, including for ETFs, too. What about individual stocks? Thank you.
  • @Crash et al
Keep in mind that 'ticker symbols' must be 'caps letters' in order to become 'blue highlight' to allow hover for name or right click for other choices. This doesn't always happen by the poster.
Single letter ticker symbols can present problems. Example: The ticker symbol for Agilent Technologies is A (traded on the NYSE).
