  • I like the way the Mary Jane Girls do this Rick James song.

@Mona. Nice! Had not heard of them before. Sexy.

@Hank I have a set of the Sony NC headphones too. For flying and yard work. They are the 900's though. Then I bought a pair of Bose 700, cuz everyone said they were the best. Honestly, I can't tell the difference. Funny that we both seem to like the Polk speakers.

Sticking with the theme of covers and/or live music.
Here are The Indigo Girls doing Bob Dylan's Tangled Up In Blue

Who has heard of The Highwoman? A play on "The Highwayman", who need no explanation. They are comprised of Brandy Carlisle, Natalie Hemby, Maren Morris and Amanda Shires. And backed by Jason Isbell, Amanda's husband, and a an awesome musician in his own right. Amanda's violin work is always stellar.

    Click on "Watch on Youtube".

You may need a tissue for this one! Not quite a "cover". In this version, they are accompanied by Yola.

  • It doesn't get better than this.

  • Discovered a "new" song by Ry Cooder in my Spotify Daily Mix today.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e7hyTIckKa8
  • KJarrett playing Handel, not great but always interesting to hear a jazzman's understanding
  • I have heard the name Ry Cooder for decades and never could put a song to the name before. Reminds me of The Band, The Grateful Dead, JJ Cale and maybe even John Hiatt (a little). I like it!

@Mona That is the soundtrack to my early youth. I was about 8 when they played that on Ed Sullivan. The Lovin' Spoonful sure got a lot of airplay back then. And this, a cover, naturally:

I'm glad that you liked the song.
Speaking of John Hiatt, Ry Cooder played on Hiatt's excellent Bring the Family album.
The four musicians¹ who played on this album would later form a short-lived band called Little Village.

¹ Ry Cooder (guitar, vocal); John Hiatt (guitar, piano, vocal); Nick Lowe (bass, vocal); Jim Keltner (drums)
  • @DrVenture California dreaming is a classic.

Here is one that I am certain we both listened to a lot and really like!

@mona I listen to that a lot. Right up my alley, as they say. Great version.

I really love this live backyard medley (including Can't You See). The guitarist is exceptional. At least four different songs in the medley.

And while we are at it, this is amazing. It is in regular rotation on music night at our house.

A supergroup for sure - Vince Gill, Zac Brown, Greg Allman, Kenny Aronoff (Mellencamp), Jack Pearson, Audley Freed, Chuck Leavell, Rami Jaffee (Foo Fighters). I know I missed someone.

@Observant1 The sort of details that prove you are a true music lover! Thanks.

  • This one goes way back. My son plays drums, performing. I did not know that fact until he told me. I like Boz Scaggs doing it: "Loan Me A Dime." Blues. A long, stretched-out version.

With Duane Allman, 1969: (Still over 13 minutes.)
  • Change of pace. Norah Jones. Did you know that Ravi Shankar was her father? Her voice is pure velvet.
  • Loan me a Dime by Boz Scaggs and Duane Allman is an absolute classic.
    Love it!
  • Nice stuff, fun facts.

Gentle Annie. (Stephen Foster.) L. Ronstadt with the McGarrigle Sisters.
  • Straight from Montreal: McGarrigle Sisters, Complainte pour Ste-Cathérine.
  • The cover by First Aid Kit:
  • Thanks, everyone. Let's keep it going.
  • "Not Fade Away." A.C.L.
  • Well, time to call it a day: "The Day Thou Gavest, Lord, Is Ended."

Awesome "Not Fade Away Cover" - saving that one.

Love me some Townes Van Zandt! Jeff Bridges (from ACL video) is connected to Townes via Lebowski (Dead Flowers). Appreciate the Wiki link, too. The extra mile!

Steve Earle named his son "Townes" in his honor.

Speaking of Steve Earle, this is getting more relevant daily:

Fun fact: Steve played the substance abuse counselor in The Wire. And his music was featured prominently.

I was watching the Peacock series "Poker face" last week, and lo-and-behold, there was Steve Earle in a cameo, playing a truck driver. Poker Face is a very cool mystery-of-the week series, that does an excellent job of channeling "Columbo". Highly recommend.

Love the song. Love the concept!
  • Steve Earle is the real stuff.Ya. And I never liked Foo Fighters until now.

IRT Foo Fighters, that was the plan.

I never listened to them until about 5 years ago. Now, both the wife and I are huge fans.

You start with Learning to Fly, then Times Like These and soon you are digging deeper! lol

Check this out (the song starts at 4:35, but the backstory is pretty good):

10,000 Maniacs doing the Patti Smith/Bruce Springsteen song: "Because The Night." Gawd, N.M. was so gorgeous. This version is HOT. Jane Scarpantoni is on the bass fiddle, and she gets credit for the same thing again with Lou Reed on "Sweet Jane," below. She's everywhere. I wonder if she's retired YET?
